The film YES fans never knew they needed to see.

Filmed with unrestricted backstage access during YES’s 35th Anniversary Tour in 2003 and 2004, Close to the Edge of Reason isn’t another history of the band. It’s an affectionate, observational journey into the wonderfully eccentric world that existed just beyond the stage.

Featuring the legendary lineup of Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Alan White, the film captures a unique moment when YES were still regarded as progressive rock royalty, even as the world around them had quietly moved on.

Standing just outside the mythology, filmmaker Robert Garofalo quietly observes the strange, funny and often surreal universe surrounding one of rock’s most ambitious bands. Cosmic philosophies, backstage rituals, lifelong friendships, extraordinary musicianship and moments of glorious absurdity combine to create a documentary that is frequently hilarious, occasionally touching and always entertaining.

Rather than laughing at YES, Close to the Edge of Reason celebrates everything that has made them one of progressive rock’s most enduring and fascinating bands. It’s a rare opportunity to experience life on tour with a legendary group from a perspective very few people were ever privileged to witness.

“During the European leg of the tour, I travelled with one of the world’s most legendary prog rock bands. I wasn’t there to settle old scores or rewrite history. I simply stood behind the camera and watched.

What I discovered wasn’t conflict—it was something far more interesting. The strange, funny, touching and wonderfully human world that exists when extraordinary musicians spend decades living inside the mythology they’ve created.

The cameras simply happened to be rolling. This isn’t the story of YES. It’s the story of what it was like to stand just outside the YES universe and quietly watch it unfold.”
