Filmed with unrestricted backstage access during YES’s legendary 35th Anniversary Tour (2003–2004), Close to the Edge of Reason is an affectionate, funny and revealing observational documentary that takes viewers beyond the concert stage and into the wonderfully eccentric world of one of prog rock’s greatest bands.

Featuring the classic lineup of Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Alan White, the film captures a unique moment in the band’s history, when YES were still regarded as progressive rock royalty, even as the modern world had quietly moved on around them.

Standing just outside the mythology, filmmaker Robert Garofalo documents life on the road from a perspective few people were ever privileged to witness. Rather than telling the history of YES, the film simply watches it unfold—revealing the friendships, personalities, humour, contradictions and glorious absurdity that surrounded one of rock’s most ambitious bands.

Jon Anderson receives messages from the cosmos with complete sincerity. Rick Wakeman remains one of the greatest keyboard players of all time while wearing capes with absolute conviction. Steve Howe quietly inhabits his own universe. Alan White calmly observes the chaos around him as though none of it is remotely unusual. Chris Squire punctuates it all with perfectly timed wit and effortless charisma.

The result is neither a concert film nor a conventional band documentary. It is a warm, observational portrait of the strange world that exists when extraordinary musicians spend decades becoming legends—and then continue living inside the mythology they created.
