Rick Wakeman is an English keyboardist, songwriter, and composer known for his contributions to the progressive rock genre. Born on May 18, 1949, in Perivale, Middlesex, he started playing the piano at a young age. By the 1960s, he was playing with local bands, including The Strawbs, where he began to gain recognition for his virtuosic keyboard playing. In 1971, Wakeman joined the legendary rock band Yes, contributing to their albums Fragile and Close to the Edge. He also released solo albums, including The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Throughout his career, Wakeman has worked with other musicians, including David Bowie, Elton John, and Cat Stevens. In addition to his music, Wakeman has hosted radio shows and acted, including a role in the cult classic film, Lisztomania. He has also supported various charitable causes, including the Musicians Against Homelessness campaign. Today, Wakeman continues to tour and record music, showcasing his mastery of the keyboard.
