Syrian, Mustapha Karkouti was an accomplished journalist and media consultant with over 40 years of experience. He covered events in the Middle East, Europe and North America for a variety of prestigious news organizations including the BBC, The Sunday Times, Al Hayat and Gulf News. Karkouti had a reputation for breaking exclusive stories and his work has won him numerous awards, including the UK's "Reporter of the Year" in 1980. However, perhaps his most notable experience was being one of the hostages in the infamous Iranian Embassy Siege in London in 1980. During the siege, Karkouti worked closely with the authorities in order to negotiate the safe release of the hostages. His bravery and professionalism in the face of danger were widely recognized. Since then, Karkouti  continued to work as a respected journalist and commentator and also acted as a media consultant for governments, corporations and NGOs around the world. He died in July 2020 at the age of 76.
