The start of the Second World War in September 1939 was a pivotal event in world history. In an attempt to expand its territory, Germany invaded Poland. This ignited a series of events that led to Britain and other countries declaring war on Germany. The British armed forces were immediately mobilized to defend their country against German aggression. The Soviet Union also joined the fray and invaded Poland from the east, further contributing to the chaos and violence.
